Endless Realms bestiary - the Inexorable

Description

Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.

I was going over angel designs with the art director earlier this month, and the problem with so many angels being simply beautiful men and women with white wings, namely that they're kinda boring!  And, in all honesty, the common imagery of "human with wings and halo" wasn't actually in the Bible but rather was popularized by artists - angels were often strange and inhuman (and awesome), like wheels of eyes or fearsome multi-headed chimeras.  I wanted to try to find a compromise - bring back more of the inhuman-ness of angels, but still try to keep the familiar humanoid shape where applicable.

This one was my first attempt.  The concept of an angelic mage, an avatar of the cosmic force of Order, unyielding, emotionless, immovable.  I felt using "sacred geometry"-like patterns and giving him an implacable, faceless, golem-like appearance would hopefully convey that.  The runes, meanwhile, serve more than simply a decorative purpose - runes are integral to the casting of Order magic (or so I'm told by the game developers).

Absolutely love it.

Yes you are very correct the angels were often depicted either by the bible, mysticism, or apocrypha as these extremely bizarre creatures and its really a great shame how a lot of their designs in the modern era are well boring and ridiculously tame. The artist of modern day and previous middle ages renditions basically neutered these ideas
