Looking for artist contest - *LAST CALL*

Journal Entry: Tue Mar 4, 2008, 4:52 PM

Jocarra - Jen Philpot

Edit 3: Last call for entries. I've decided on a deadline of April 1 for anyone interested in entering the contest.

* * *

Edit 2: An artist to do the large commission for my friend has been found. After looking at a number of prospective artists, AJ has decided on *Zephyri.

He's still interested in concept art and sketches, however, so I still encourage participation in the contest, especially if you found the description at all inspiring.

If you're interested in smaller conceptual commissions, AJ is always looking for artists to help flesh out his ideas. Let me know if you're interested.

* * *

Edit: Perhaps I should clarify. I am holding a concept design contest, the winner of which wins $30-worth to be spent here at dA. The winner does NOT automatically get the commission, as no suitable artist may show up - I am holding the contest simply to encourage participation and to help my friend gather some more concept art.

If you are seriously interested in doing a large, expensive commission for my friend, please let me know specifically.

The request

On behalf of a friend, I'm looking for a skilled artist who would be capable of completing a large, detailed, full-colour illustration, as follows. He is willing to pay a good few hundred dollars to anyone who can do his concept justice. Please let me know if you yourself are interested, or if you know someone else who might fit the bill. Someone whose style suits the task, someone more talented than myself. Thanks a lot for your help and input.

The contest

To encourage participation, I've decided to turn this into something of a contest. Besides the price of the actual commission, I'm willing to offer a $30 prize in DeviantDollars (such as a year's subscription or print of equivalent worth) to whoever submits the best concept illustration. If a suitable artist is not found for commission, a winner will be chosen and rewarded anyway.

Anyone may participate, and you may submit more than once. Any medium is acceptable for the contest portion, while the commission is intended to be full colour. Regardless of talent, concept art would be greatly appreciated, so I encourage participation. There is no set due date as of yet - you have many months to produce.

The description

Following is a description provided to me by my friend of what he wants...

"A man kneels on a hill, hands clasped almost in genuflection. His face is torn by sorrow, all but crying. The shadows dance across his face, a testament to the night's deeds, and the crickets sing accompaniment to the song upon his lips, a joyful song made bittersweet by the carnage strewn about him."

"The illustration should be from the side, on a slight downward angle. The centre of the picture is of a burning village, but the real focus is the figure on the hill."

"The man's name is Vual."

"It's a strong contrast of sorrow, two types of pain, side by side: one for the village, and the other for the man, his destructive nature of one who has lost everything worth fighting for."

"The flames should stand out and draw the eye initially, and only as they drift away from that should they notice the figure on the hill. The village should be closer to the viewer than Vual. He should be big enough to see the details precisely, such as expression, but not large enough to draw the eye until second glances. His face is not as important as the posture and mood."

"He should have his back to the viewer, with his head bowed and face turned slightly to the left, watching the light of the flames from the corner of his eyes as he stares off into darkness. His sword is carelessly dropped near him - it is very worn."

"The village is on the centre, to the left, dominating the image. Vual is to the right and further into the distance as a side of sidenote, although he is the true focus of the image."

"Fade out to virtual black on the right side of the picture, where detail starts to fade. Left to right, it should be village, Vual, blackness."

"The background consists of forested hills. It is not quite late enough for stars - just creeping shadows."

"Colours seem drained or leeched of their natural brilliance: deep reds, almost blackish purple, and a soft orange twilight. I always picture the figure being defined as much by shadow as by light - Vual should be only half lit by the flames of the village."

The armour

"This is not necessarily a direct description of how his armour should look exactly in the image - Vual should appear to wear his armour as a man wears his everyday clothes - it should be practical and natural. He should not necessarily be wearing his full suit of armour in the image, but rather, what follows is a description of what his full suit of armour would look like."

"The armour and two-handed sword should be dented and worn, and seemingly commonplace in appearance."

Helm
Vual's helm
"The design across the visor and down the middle needs to be changed to something that looks standard, but takes on an evil look when viewed in deep shadow. Try for something that looks more commonplace."

Gauntets
Vual's gauntlets
"These gauntlets only need one alteration: the wrist guards need to be extended to the mid-forearm (ie. made from a wrist bracer to an arm bracer). The fancy gold can probably go. Maybe contrast can be maintained by using a different metal."

Neck guard
Vual's neck guard
"This one is a little trickier: I want to extend the neck guard a full 360, then cut a circular piece out of it, just wider than the chin."

Greaves
Vual's greaves
"Trim down to the knee piece, then pronounce it by give it a bit of a vertical extension."

Full suit
Vual's full suit
"Remove the legging and crotch pieces, as well as the gauntlets, forearm pieces, and helmet - use the armour as described previously, and integrate them into this accordingly. I would also like the breastplate to be of a slightly different design, as if the other parts of the original suit were destroyed, and new pieces were fashioned to replace them."

Sword
Vual's sword
"Alter the hilt, handle, and blade size into a two-handed version. Make a little less fancy."

That sounds really cool. Too bad it's beyond my abilities now. Maybe in a few years . . . I hope you can find someone who will work!

I found this artist awhile back. I have no idea if he takes commissions or anything like that, but most of his stuff is knights and maidens and things like that. Hope it helps a bit!

*whistles* Lots of details there. I can just about see it all in my head... Only problem is, I haven't done much of anything in the way of digital painting yet, and certainly couldn't do it better then you. *laughs and shakes head* Good luck finding contestants. I look forward to seeing what they come up with. :)

Hey!

I am think I am interest in it - but my skills are lwoer than yours XD

only problem for me, the description a bit hard for my english, if you will be able just sketch the composition for me (not detailed, just for me to see how it is) it will be a GREAT help for me.

I tried to figure it out but I had problem in the second quote about the description how it should be look like, and totally lost the point ^^;

So... if you think and mostly your friend think my skills reach what you both want, I think I am interest in it (and if there is no too close deadline, I am ahrd woth too close deadlines ^^;)

Can I just point out that you couldn't really have Vual with his back to the viewers AND have the village in the foreground.
Some very hard perspectives to get round, this is o_O

And I think it'd have to be a friggin hugeass picture if he has to be big enough to have details yet further than the village. D;

Oi whatever. I'll just try working with it.

Lol, and I'm having to look up what 'genuflection' means. I'm sure you'll decline, but is it okay if I make it to mostly your friends' specifications, but if I can't work it, I do it my way. Some of the things in the specifications are contradicting each other. And the 'body armor' picture is broken. Either way, I'm trying it out ;]
