Artist's Comments

A howling wolf, to be the cover of The Wolves of North America, a portfolio featuring the lupine artwork of ten other artists as well as information on Canis lupus.

* * *

This piece is actually quite experimental in nature: it marks the first prominent change in my fur-rendering technique initially described in my fur tutorial. The differences may be seen in the various work-in-progress images ( [link] [link] ) - instead of relying on opaque blocks and mass scribbling, I've done most of the work using soft airbrushing, followed by detailing (which involved rendering fur hair-by-hair). It also managed to drastically cut down the amount of time taken. I'm really quite pleased with it :3 A photo reference was used from one of my wolf calendars, as well as stock texture for the forest floor that was manipulated to match the rest of the background.

20. Adobe PhotoShop 7.0. ~4 hours.

You blow me away completely. Every time I see your work it's like i'm seeing it for the first time. It just keeps getting more and more amazing, as if that's even possible :O_o: I mean, it looks real no doubt, but all the texture and detail and work you put into it truly shows not only your high level of talent, but also your level of patience, which is something to be admired these days :) I have to fav this... but you already could have guessed that ;)
:iconjomina:
you did a gorgeous job on this, to say the least :)

My ONLY critique on this, since you welcome it anyhow, would be that the background COULD look a lil more "popping.

I say this because the ground is quite heavily detailed, the wolf especially detailed, and then the background trees are... well... barely there ;)

I think you were going for the distance aspect, but... i think this piece would be absolutely INCREDIBLE with a blurred out forest background, with the fog wisping through the trees hehe Or well, much more detailed than what you have, is what i mean

Anyhow, as is, its incredible and you should hear the applause from me :)

Aww, thank you very much! :thanks: Strangely enough, the fur on the neck actually felt like one of the easier parts o_O

Thank you very much! I appreciate your criticism, too, by the way, and I do see what you mean. I was mostly wanting to go for something less detailed for the "top" half, because the top featured the face and body of the wolf, and I didn't want to detract from that. To balance it, the bottom of the image is more detailed because I am less worried about the legs being detracted from. However, your idea sounds very cool, although I have a feeling I won't be going back to do it over again... However, I'll keep it in mind for next time. Thank you!
