Jayli
Evolution - Birth

Series image 1 of 4 (although 6 were intended), done for my drawing class in which we were asked to draw a series that introduced myself and/or described a transformative process. Naturally, I picked Jayli.

I wanted it to use a single figure, alone, to portray as much as I could both about myself and Jayli. This particular image serves as the beginning of our story, representing a kind of child-like shyness/fear and unwillingness to face the world.

As a sidenote, my biggest critique was that "it's too perfect, so I can't see your artistic intent and it doesn't interest me. You should have made her ugly."

~4 hours. Graphite and kneadable eraser.

everything is amazing. I love the whole lonely feel the white space provides. :)
Its perfect... but why make her ugly for art's purpose? ugh.

Heh, thank you very much, I really do appreciate it :thanks:

Haha, yeah, that's what I thought :P They ask me to do art that represents me in some way, and I choose to draw my character, and then they tell me I shouldn't have drawn my character that way :P It'd be like asking a woman to paint a self portrait, and then saying, "You should have painted yourself as a man. It would have been more interesting."

ughh I dont like when people do that T___T I'm only in middle school and I already really hate it when teachers tell you what to do in art, yet tell you to be creative =^= kinda hypocritical, isn't it??

It totally is!

"Draw what you like!... Oh, but don't draw that. Or that. Or that. In fact, only draw what I tell you to."

yeah. They say ALL the time "You need to be creative with your art! Think of imaginative things! Let your mind wander!" but then they say "Okay, due a week from now, you need to draw a picture off-" *looks around for idea* "-a turtle!"
Thats not a very open assignment... and thats what most of art class is like >>

Ouch, that is pretty constrained. My assignments are a lot better than that, in that they're a lot more open to interpretation, which is nice. Still constrained to other people's mindsets, though :P

Ugh, I can't see how someone can feel any drawing 'too perfect', I really can't!

But anyway, I really do love this image

Just remeber they're teachers...there's an old saying "Those that can't do, teach." although I always found the saying a little offensive and for the most part untrue...there are exceptions. :)
